Indiana: from final payment to clear title.
6 guides, each starting at a different point where the Indiana payoff-to-title handoff can stall.
DMV SNAPSHOT
- Title system
- Indiana supports paper/electronic title preferences and e-liens. After a lien is released and no liens remain, the owner’s recorded title-format preference controls.
- After payoff
- An electronic-title owner can remain electronic after payoff; a paper preference results in printing/mailing after the release when no lien remains.
- Lien release
- Paper liens use signed title or compliant release letter; e-liens must be released electronically.
- Owner action
- Determine the title/lien format first, then obtain the matching release or amendment. If an old lender is out of business, Indiana directs owners to a local court for an order.
- Timing
- No single payoff-to-mailbox period applies because electronic title preference can mean no paper mailing at all.
