Maryland: from final payment to clear title.
6 guides, each starting at a different point where the Maryland payoff-to-title handoff can stall.
DMV SNAPSHOT
- Title system
- Maryland uses SIF/electronic lien records. Since Dec. 4, 2024, MVA no longer automatically prints a clear duplicate title solely because an e-lien was released.
- After payoff
- After electronic release, MVA records show the lien released and the customer is notified through email or myMVA; a clear paper title can be requested when needed.
- Lien release
- Electronic release is the normal path; MVA still accepts a notarized lien-release letter when an electronic release attempt returns an error.
- Owner action
- Verify the release in myMVA, then request a paper clear title only if your next transaction requires it.
- Timing
- Dealer/title-agent timing differs from ordinary consumer duplicate-title delivery; use the channel-specific status information.
