New Jersey: from final payment to clear title.
10 guides, each starting at a different point where the New Jersey payoff-to-title handoff can stall.
DMV SNAPSHOT
- Title system
- New Jersey describes the lending institution as holding the title while its lien is active. After payoff, the owner uses acceptable lien-satisfaction evidence and, when needed, requests a lien-free title from NJMVC.
- After payoff
- NJMVC allows a lien-free title to be reissued at a motor vehicle agency or by mail. The state currently lists a $60 fee and requires the endorsed New Jersey title or the title with a lien-satisfaction letter attached.
- Lien release
- A financial institution's lien-satisfaction letter must be signed and dated on official letterhead and identify the owner, lender contact information, VIN, year and make. Individual lienholder letters must be notarized.
- Owner action
- Keep the lender's satisfaction evidence, verify what the MVC record shows, and use the lien-free reissue, duplicate-title, title/lien search or title-correction process that matches the problem.
- Timing
- NJMVC does not publish one universal payoff-to-title deadline. Mail-in duplicate-title requests can take eight to twelve weeks, while a routine lien-free reissue follows a different workflow.
