TX · STATE PROCESS
Texas: from final payment to clear title.
The Texas guide below works one post-payoff title problem back through the state's documents and release process.
DMV SNAPSHOT
- Title system
- Texas operates an Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) program. The electronic title is held in the TxDMV motor-vehicle database while a participating lienholder's lien is active.
- After payoff
- TxDMV says that after a lien is satisfied, the lender submits an electronic lien release. The lienholder is removed from the record and a paper title is sent to the owner.
- Lien release
- The lender's electronic release is the key event. For dealer trade-in payoffs involving an e-title, TxDMV states the lienholder has 10 business days after receipt of payment to release the lien.
- Owner action
- Ask the lender for the date its ELT release was transmitted. If the title is still missing after the expected processing and mailing period, verify the owner address and contact TxDMV or the county tax office with the vehicle information.
- Timing
- Consumer-owner timing can vary by processing and mail. The 10-business-day rule quoted by TxDMV is specifically described for dealer trade-in payoffs.
