Washington: from final payment to clear title.
The Washington guide below works one post-payoff title problem back through the state's documents and release process.
DMV SNAPSHOT
- Title system
- Washington's Electronic Titles Program is optional for participating banks, credit unions and other lenders. A participating lender can hold an electronic title record instead of a paper title while its lien is active.
- After payoff
- Washington DOL says that after a participating lender releases the lien electronically, the department prints a paper title and mails it to the vehicle owner.
- Lien release
- If the lender does not send the release information needed to remove its name from the record, the owner can visit a vehicle licensing office with a qualifying notarized release-of-interest document or the current Washington title carrying the lienholder's releasing signature.
- Owner action
- First confirm whether the lender used Washington's electronic title program. If no title arrives or the lienholder remains on the record, obtain the lender's release evidence and use a vehicle licensing office rather than assuming the loan payoff automatically corrected the title record.
- Timing
- Washington's public electronic-title page says the paper title is printed and mailed after electronic release but does not give a universal number of days for owner receipt.
