- Title system
- For current Wisconsin liens, the lender generally receives the vehicle title and most non-individual lenders are required to release the lien electronically when the loan is paid in full.
- After payoff
- When the lender electronically releases the paid lien and there is no other lien, Wisconsin says the owner automatically receives a new title in the mail.
- Lien release
- If the lender is exempt from electronic release and does not release the lien electronically, the owner can send the original lien release to WisDOT. Wisconsin also provides an online lienholder search to confirm whether the state record still shows a lien.
- Owner action
- After payoff, use Wisconsin's lienholder search to confirm the release. If the lien was not electronically released, follow WisDOT's instruction to submit the original lien release rather than carrying the stale lien forward into a later title transaction.
- Timing
- WisDOT says to allow up to six weeks to receive a new title after the lien is removed. There is no fee to remove the lien from a Wisconsin title.
